The left boot of the model shows the areas of highest air pollution in dark red in Italy during the Covid-19 pandemic. The right boot shows the high incidence of deaths from Covid -19 in the same period. 

    

Constant levels of high air pollution affect the lungs making people more prone to lung disease and other health conditions, making them more vulnerable  to Covid-19. This is based on research in Air Quality News, 1.14.2022, Long term air pollution exposure linked to Covid-19 incidence. The Po valley in Northern Italy has very high levels of air pollution due to the traffic of 5 major cities being on the Po river as well as many factories associated with the fashion industry.
